Manchester United’s David de Gea says he can’t wait for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, and hopes he can lift the trophy with Spain.
De Gea was named as one of three keepers in Julen Lopetegui’s 23-man side for the tournament earlier this month. Bilbao shotstopper Kepa, as well as Napoli’s Pepe Reina will also travel.
This will De Gea’s second World Cup with Spain, however the first in which he starts the competition as his country’s number one.
At Brazil 2014, La Furia Roja were thrown out of the tournament at the group stages, much to the shock of the footballing world, but De Gea insists the same won’t happen again, with the Spaniard believing he and his countryman can go all the way.
“I’m really excited for this World Cup to get under way,” David told MUTV. “I’ve got high hopes and I’m really looking forward to it.
“We have a great national side and a really top group of players.
“We have come off the back of a really excellent qualification campaign, and now it’s time for the best bit to get started.
“So now for the good bit, the World Cup tournament itself, and let’s enjoy it and take things game by game and try and perform well and hopefully have a real go at it and maybe even win the World Cup.”
Spain take on Portugal in their first match of the tournament in June 15th.
